After a challenging 2024, 2025 did not deliver the broad uplift in hiring that the most optimistic in the market had expected. Broader economic factors continue to affect hiring triggers, and the ABPI used its pre-Budget submission to urge the government to take urgent steps to reverse a decade-long decline in investment and restore the UK’s position as a global leader in life sciences, long regarded as one of the most advanced and innovative sectors in the world.
July’s Life Sciences Sector Plan (LSSP) is, in principle, a positive step forward, including a commitment to create the world’s most advanced, secure, and AI-ready health data platform to support global trials and AI investment, as well as backing manufacturing with up to £520 million through the Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing Fund. However, more is needed to fully energise the sector.
Positively, Europe’s clinical research market is showing early signs of recovery following a challenging 2024. Regulatory clarity from the UK’s updated MHRA framework and the EU’s Clinical Trials Regulation is helping to unlock investment and resume delayed trials. Clinical operations roles are leading the rebound, with vacancies up 41.3%, senior CRA positions rising 9.7%, and Clinical Trial Assistants increasing 28.6%. The UK is a standout, with CRO hiring up 31.1%, reinforcing its position as a growing clinical research hub. Germany is also recovering (+19.0%), while France, Spain, and Poland lag behind, highlighting an uneven regional recovery.
